LI 15 (Jianyu) for ankle sprain[1]

Methods

Select LI 15 (Jianyu) on the diseased side and obliquely insert the filiform needle (0.30×50mm in size), 45 degrees to the skin. After obtaining qi (De Qi), the patient has local sore, numb, distending, and sinking sensation, which extending downward to the hand is desired. Retain the needle for 45 minutes. Manipulate the needle once every 10-15 minutes during the needle retention. Instruct the patient to move the ankle joints of the affected side during the needle manipulation.

Comments

LI 15 (Jianyu) is the confluent point of the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming and Yang Motility Vessel. Yangming meridians are rich in qi and blood; therefore, the Large Intestine meridian can be used to promote qi and blood and remove stasis. The Yang Motility Vessel has actions of connecting yin qi and yang qi of the whole body and regulating limb movements. Stimulating LI 15 (Jianyu) while moving the affected area, helping qi to arrive at the diseased area, can move qi and blood, relax tendons, activate collaterals, promote blood flow, and relieve pain.
